Tips on Construction Cleanup

Construction cleanup may be performed on new construction sites, and it may be done in areas that are being remodeled. When you are doing construction cleanup you have to make certain that you are not going to be in the way of the craftsmen that will be working in the area next, and you must be certain that you comply with all disposal laws.

Construction cleanup crews will usually rent a dumpster from a company with the understanding that the debris that will be tossed into the dumpster will be construction related. You are not allowed to place construction debris into household dumpsters, or dumpsters that are not specifically set up for construction site usage.

Even when you have a dumpster designated for construction cleanup use you may have to separate paint cans, chemical containers, and aerosol containers from the scrap lumber, shingles, nails, drywall, and other materials.

When cleaning up a house under construction you will want to do the cleaning in phases. After the carpenters frame the walls you will want to come in and pick up all of the lumber cut-offs, bent nails, and trash. You may want to sweep the inside of the structure at this time.

The next phase of the construction will include electricians coming in to pull wires through the walls so the carpenters can come behind them and place wall boards, or sheetrock up. When the electricians are finished there will not be very much to clean up. You can clean again after they complete their work or you can wait until the wall coverings have been hung.

You will need to clean the glass of newly installed windows. There will be dirt, dust, and stickers on them. You can use fabric softener to make the stickers turn loose from the glass. Simply rub the fabric softener over the paper backing of the sticker and let it set there long enough that it dissolves the glue holding the sticker in place. You might have to repeat the process several times before you get all of the stickers removed. This works on appliances, and it works to help you remove old wall paper borders from walls.

New faucets, sinks, and tubs will all need to be wiped down to remove the dirt left behind during their installation. These items may also have stickers on them that have to be removed. The fabric softener will not harm the finish of the tub, sink, or shower.

You will need to vacuum new carpeting after it is installed, and new tile floors will need to have a damp mop ran across them to remove dirt and grime.
